Spark of Irish Independence

Under Review

Description: This historic horizontal Irish commemorative stamp features a striking, deeply inked black-on-cream graphic layout. The left side of the composition prominently frames an armed member of the Irish Volunteers holding a bayoneted rifle across his chest, turning his gaze resolutely upward toward the sky. Set in Gaelic font directly behind the soldier's shoulder is the opening passage from the 1916 Proclamation of the Irish Republic: “..In ainm Dé agus in ainm na nglún d'imigh rómhainn..” alongside the historical event label "Forógra 1916". The classic Neoclassical facade of the Dublin General Post Office; the iconic operational headquarters during the rebellion, fills out the lower right quadrant. The national name "éire" spans across the upper center margin in a prominent Celtic script. Slipped into the lower right corner is the distinctive fractional postal value marking of "2½p". Wavy lines from a parallel transit cancel cut directly through the upper landscape layout.
