Treasure detail

Hungarian Sándor Petőfi Definitive

Under Review

Description: This original 1-Forint postal stamp was issued by the state postal authority, Magyar Posta, as part of a definitive series celebrating historical national figures. Photogravure-printed in a rich, solid medium blue ink, the design centers on a dramatic three-quarter profile illustration of Sándor Petőfi. The legendary writer is depicted in a traditional collared shirt, holding a quill and paper. The poet's name is arranged vertically down the right margin as "PETŐFI SÁNDOR". In the upper-left corner, the face value is explicitly declared with a large numeral "1" stacked vertically over the currency abbreviation "Ft". The base of the design features the text "MAGYAR POSTA" in a clean, high-contrast serif font. Running outside the lower border line is the miniature inscription "K-BOCZ ISTVÁN", recognizing the prominent Hungarian graphic artist István Köpeczi-Boócz who designed the issue.

Circa: 1947-1950s

Condition: Used

Notes:

The subject of this stamp is widely revered as Hungary's supreme national poet and a premier leader of the Hungarian Revolution of 1848 against Habsburg rule. He famously penned the Nemzeti Dal (National Song), an inspiring anthem that served as the primary catalyst for the country's independence movement. Because he mysteriously disappeared or was killed at the young age of 26 during the Battle of Segesvár, his heroic, youthful image remains an enduring patriotic symbol across Eastern Europe.
