Emperor of the Estuaries

Description: This beautifully preserved, diamond-framed stamp features a face value of 40 fillér and depicts a majestic Osprey (Pandion haliaetus) scanning its territory. The bird is meticulously illustrated with its distinctive dark brown wing plumage, white breast, dark eye stripe, and fiercely sharp blue-gray talons securely gripping a tree stump. Set against a warm, gradient amber-yellow background, a barren tree trunk and soft water ripples frame the predator to highlight its wetland ecosystem. The bird's Hungarian common name, "HALÁSZSAS" (Fish Eagle), is clearly printed in bold block letters at the upper apex, complemented by the scientific name running vertically along the left-hand border. The left and right margins contain the striking, vertically aligned typography reading "LÉGIPOSTA" (Airmail), while the lower segment anchors the layout with the country name "MAGYAR POSTA" situated directly over the artist signature "GÓZÁN LAJOS."
