Modernist Hungarian Academy

Under Review

Description: This vintage 1 Ft (one Hungarian forint) definitive postage stamp was issued by the Hungarian People's Republic (Magyar Népköztársaság) as part of a multi-year series documenting state architecture. The central landscape design is printed in a cold slate-blue monochrome ink against a soft cream backdrop. The illustration features a detailed perspective view of the György Kilián Street School (Kilián György Úti Iskola) in Budapest, rendered with the crisp lines of mid-century functionalist architecture. A group of school children and a teacher are sketched in the lower right foreground walking toward the massive modern building complex. The currency face value "1 Ft" is prominently placed in the upper left corner, while the capital city name "BUDAPEST" runs vertically along the right border. The country name designation "MAGYAR POSTA" anchors the lower margin in a bold, capitalized serif typeface.

Circa: 1950s

Condition: Used - Hinged

Notes:

This specific 1 Forint issue belongs to Hungary's expansive "Buildings of the Five-Year Plan" series (Ötéves Terv Épületei). The collection was deliberately designed by the socialist government to showcase major architectural achievements, civil engineering feats, and newly constructed public facilities like schools, power plants, and modern post offices.

The institution on the stamp honors György Kilián, a prominent young Hungarian communist activist and anti-fascist resistance fighter who was killed during World War II. Naming new state infrastructure after wartime heroes was a foundational propaganda tool used across the Eastern Bloc to foster civic patriotism.
