Treasure detail

Hungarian Regency Buda Castle Definitive

Under Review

Description: This horizontal postage stamp displays a highly detailed engraving of the sweeping royal palace grounds positioned atop a fortified hillside terrace. The country's name is boldly showcased inside an ornamental border spanning across the top margin, while dual value blocks house the numeric denomination inside both lower corners. A heavy, dark ink municipal postmark curves dynamically across the lower quadrant of the vignette, leaving a distinctive archival stamp cancellation.

Circa: 1920s-1930s

Condition: Used

Notes:

The detailed vignette depicts the majestic Buda Castle profile prior to its extensive structural destruction during the Siege of Budapest in World War II. This series marked a landmark transition in national currency, replacing the unstable post-WWI Korona system with the newly introduced Pengő and Fillér denominations.

The underlying artwork belongs to a carefully modified engraving sequence where technical plate adjustments differentiate it from neighboring years. In this early 1927 printing, the design was intentionally finalized without any visible boats traveling upon the river below the castle wall, a detail that was famously redrawn to include two vessels for subsequent production runs. The prominent crescent postmark reads "BALATONALMÁDI," indicating this specific specimen was processed through a historic lakeside resort town post office located along the northern shore of Lake Balaton.
