Notes:
Issued to commemorate the continuing influence of the Boy Scout movement in Greece and worldwide. The olive-green border represents peace and nature, reflecting Scouting’s ideals.
This stamp was issued as part of a 5-stamp commemorative series by the Hellenic Post to celebrate the 11th World Scout Jamboree. The massive gathering ran from August 1 to August 11, 1963. It was hosted right on the very fields where the famous ancient Battle of Marathon was fought in 490 B.C. Around 14,000 Scouts from all over the world pitched their tents in the valley.
Greek Scouting was founded in 1910 under Lefkaditis’ leadership and quickly aligned with Baden-Powell’s international ideals of youth service and outdoor education. This issue celebrates four decades of Scouting in Greece and remains a favorite among scout-themed philatelists.
