The Palace of Knossos Tourism Issue

Under Review

Description: Depicts the Palace of Knossos, the ceremonial and political center of the Minoan civilization on Crete (circa 2000–1400 BCE). The stamp shows the reconstructed Grand Staircase and upper colonnade, one of archaeologist Sir Arthur Evans’ iconic restorations of the site. The name “ΚΝΩΣΟΣ” (Knossos) appears in the upper-left corner, with “ΕΛΛΑΣ” (Hellas) and denomination “ΔΡ. 2.50” below. This particular issue highlights Crete’s Minoan legacy, the earliest advanced civilization in Europe.

Circa: 1961

Condition: Used, clean and well-centered, with light postmarking on margin paper.

Notes:
The Knossos issue represents Greece’s early archaeological pride and modern nation-building symbolism, linking its classical identity with the rediscovered Bronze Age roots of Europe.
