Description: This horizontal commemorative postage stamp features a stylized graphic modeled after an ancient Greek red-figure or black-figure panathenaic pottery painting. Depicted inside a large black semicircular curve are two nude ancient boxers engaged in a match, with the left figure stepping forward with an outstretched arm while the right fighter ducks defensively. The upper-left quadrant displays the official cinco-ringed Olympic Games logo printed cleanly in dark blue ink. Stretched along the base of the design are the bold capitalized country name "ΕΛΛΑΣ" on the left and the face value denomination "ΔΡ. 6" on the right.
Circa: 1964
Condition: Used - On fragment
Notes:
This beautiful issue belongs to a comprehensive multi-value set released by the Greek postal service to mark the XVIII Olympiad held in Tokyo. Rather than utilizing modern photographic imagery, the designers chose to honor Greece’s historical legacy as the birthplace of the ancient games by replicating authentic archaeological artifacts found on classical amphoras and vases. This particular used example remains attached to a ragged fragment of its original paper envelope backing, displaying a partial circular wavy-line cancellation mark on the right border.
