Greek Hermes Sandals Issue

Under Review

Description: This definitive stamp portrays the Greek god Hermes, messenger of the deities, leaning forward to fasten his winged sandals while bracing his foot upon a stone block. The detailed mythological vignette is flanked by two stylized, fluted columns supporting an upper banner that displays the country name "ΕΛΛΑΣ" (Hellas) in bold Greek lettering. At the base, a corresponding banner spells out the currency unit "ΛΕΠΤΑ" (Lepta), flanked on both sides by the Arabic numeral denomination "80" set into square corners. The entire composition is engraved and printed in a monochromatic lilac-brown ink scheme on cream paper with a standard perforated edge design.

Circa: 1911-1923

Condition: Used

Notes:

The central image is not a modern drawing but rather a direct artistic reproduction of the famous classical statue "Hermes Fastening His Sandal" attributed to the ancient master sculptor Lysippos.
