Greece Diagoras "New Drachmae" Overprint Stamp

Under Review

Description: This artifact is an original Greek postage stamp featuring a historical bi-level production history. The underlying base stamp is a horizontal, perforated 50-lepta definitive issue from the 1937 Ancient Greece and Mythology Series. It features a finely engraved, sepia-toned central vignette depicting the celebrated ancient athlete Diagoras of Rhodes being carried in triumph through a cheering crowd. The right margin displays the vertical inscription "ΕΛΛΑΣ" (Greece) inside an ornamental tablet, while the face value "50 ΛΕΠΤΑ" anchors the lower left corner. Crucially, the stamp is struck across the center with a prominent dark blue typo-printed overprint reading "ΔΡΑΧΜΑΙ ΝΕΑΙ" (New Drachmae), which updates the original value to reflect an emergency economic stabilization period.

Circa: 1944-1945
