Nymph Arethusa and Chariot

Under Review

Description: This Greek postage stamp captures the obverse and reverse faces of a celebrated ancient silver coin from Syracuse, Sicily, dating back to the fifth century B.C. The left circular medallion details the exquisite curly-haired profile of the water nymph Arethusa surrounded by leaping dolphins, while the right medallion depicts a dynamic high-relief four-horse chariot (quadriga) being crowned by a flying goddess Nike. The design elements are starkly contrasted in a crisp golden-bronze tone against a deep solid ultramarine background frame. Inscribed across the wide bottom white border is the country name "ΕΛΛΑΣ" (Hellas) alongside the fractional denomination shorthand "Λ. 50" representing 50 lepta. A heavy, partial circular black date stamp cross-cuts the upper right side of the paper face.
