Treasure detail

West Africa's Colonial Stronghold

Under Review

Description: This vintage 1d (one old British penny) definitive postage stamp was issued by the British colonial administration of the Gold Coast, a territory located on the Gulf of Guinea that eventually transitioned into modern-day Ghana. The stamp is produced in a deep slate-blue color palette set against a soft cream background. An oval portrait vignette prominently displays King George VI in military dress facing forward in the upper left corner. The primary illustration features a detailed perspective view of Christiansborg Castle, complete with its coastal parapets and a flag flying atop the tallest tower structure. Decorative foliage and local vegetation fill the immediate lower foreground, framing the denomination in the bottom-left corner and the "CHRISTIANSBORG CASTLE" text block running cleanly along the lower edge.

Circa: 1948

Condition: Used - Hinged

Notes:

Christiansborg Castle, originally constructed as a fortified factory by Denmark-Norway in the 1660s, serves as an architectural record of the transatlantic slave trade and changing European rule. The British purchased the castle from Denmark in 1850 and established it as the administrative capital seat for the Gold Coast colony in 1902.
