Face of the Republic

Under Review

Description: This vertically oriented definitive stamp from France features a face value of 15 fillér or centimes, indicated by the "15f" printed in the upper right corner. The central illustration portrays the classic profile of Marianne, the national personification of the French Republic, wearing her traditional Phrygian cap which represents freedom and liberty. The artwork relies on heavily stylized diagonal hatching lines to shade her face, neck, and flowing hair against a rich blue background. Positioned in the lower left corner are the bold letters "RF" for République Française, balanced on the right by the vertical word "POSTES". Tiny signatures along the bottom edge credit the original designer "GANDON. Del." (Pierre Gandon) and the master engraver "CORTOT" (Jean Cortot), signifying its high-artistic production value.
