Vermilion Nordic Lion

Treasure detail

Vermilion Nordic Lion

Under Review

Description: This sharply detailed vermilion-orange definitive stamp from Finland frames the historic national coat of arms rampant lion at its center. The crowned animal stands within a background field composed of dense vertical hatching lines, surrounded by nine small heraldic roses while raising a straight sword in an armored right foreleg and stepping over a curved Eastern sabre. The right-hand margin bears the country title "FINLAND" spelled vertically inside a dedicated text block. The lower baseline displays a large numeric "15" face value positioned adjacent to the native country title "SUOMI", representing 15 penniä. A dark post office cancellation mark strikes vertically down the middle of the lion's torso and across the upper border to document its completed commercial postal travel path.

Circa: Mid 20th Century

Condition: Used - Hinged

Notes:

The specific layout of the lion crest was originally granted to the Grand Duchy of Finland in the 1580s by King John III of Sweden, and it was seamlessly retained as the proud national symbol when Finland declared full independence in 1917.
