Finnish Sami Puukko Belt Knife

Under Review

Size: 15mm w x 135mm l

Description: The traditional northern hunting and carving blade represents an intimate fusion of indigenous functionality and specialized regional folk art. Its single-edged carbon steel blade features a flat spine and a hand-struck decorative signature line etched into the fuller groove. The stacked handle consists of dense, dark-stained curly birch wood partitioned cleanly by bright spacers and capped on both ends with polished white metal ferrules. To complement the tool, the deep-pouch leather sheath utilizes a protective internal wooden blade liner, geometric Nordic borders, a curled tip, and an integrated suspension ring intended for free-swinging belt carry.

Circa: 1920s-1960s

Notes:

The puukko serves as a sacred daily multi-tool for the Sami people of Lapland, relied upon heavily for everyday camp tasks ranging from woodcarving and fish cleaning to processing reindeer hides. This specialized 135mm long version is highly collectible because the handle and leather sheath panels are painstakingly hand-etched using a traditional Sami scrimshaw method. This technique involves scratching precise geometric patterns into the reindeer antler sections and rubbing dark charcoal or oil paint into the lines to make the illustrations pop.
