Barcelona Gothic Town Hall Revenue

Under Review

Description: This vertical stamp frames a detailed depiction of the historic 14th-century Gothic facade of Barcelona's City Hall, highlighting the ornate stone archway and pointed window tracery. The word denoting postal or telegraph validation runs horizontally along the upper right portion, balanced by a large numeral and abbreviation indicating the five-céntimos face value. A multi-line block text anchoring the entire bottom margin firmly establishes the municipal origin of the issue.

Circa: 1936-1943

Condition: Unused

Notes:

The vignette specifically illustrates the famous Fachada Gótica located on Carrer de la Ciutat, which was originally designed by master builder Arnau Bargués in the late 1390s. This entrance features diamond-shaped heraldic shields carved above the door frame alongside a prominent depiction of the Archangel Raphael.

While labeled with standard postal markings, these local issues primarily functioned as municipal revenue or tax stamps within the province of Barcelona to fund city infrastructure, municipal services, or specialized local surcharges.
