Notes:

Theodor Heuss (1884–1963) was the first President of the Federal Republic of Germany (1949–1959). A liberal intellectual and writer, he was affectionately known as "Papa Heuss" and played a crucial role in restoring Germany's image abroad after WWII.

This stamp series replaced the "Posthorn" series and was the first to feature a human portrait for the new Republic. Its ubiquity during the Wirtschaftswunder (Economic Miracle) makes it a nostalgic symbol of West German recovery.
