Treasure detail

East Germany (DDR) Iron and Ink of the Iron Curtain

Under Review

Description: This is an authentic official postage stamp (Dienstmarke) issued by the German Democratic Republic (DDR / East Germany). Printed in a distinct olive-green hue, the design showcases the center of the early State Emblem of East Germany. The central motif features a worker's hammer intersecting a draftsman's compass, which is encircled by two heavy, stylized wreaths of wheat bound by a tri-color ribbon. The top text reads "DEUTSCHE DEMOKRATISCHE REPUBLIK" (German Democratic Republic), while the bottom clearly identifies its function with "DIENSTMARKE" bordered by the 20 Pfennig denomination. This specific specimen features a crisp, wavy-line postal cancellation mark across the top-right quadrant, indicating actual administrative use during the Cold War era.

Circa: 1950s

Condition: Used

Notes:

While Soviet stamps famously paired the hammer with a peasant's sickle, East Germany intentionally replaced the sickle with a compass. This was a highly deliberate political statement meant to symbolize the union of industrial workers (the hammer) and the scientific/educated intelligentsia (the compass), bound together by the agricultural peasantry (the wheat).
