Treasure detail

East Germany (DDR) Peace, Concrete, and the Socialist Family

Under Review

Description: This is the 84 Pfennig value from the Five-Year Plan series. Printed in a rich chocolate-brown, the vignette depicts an idealized "Socialist Family"—a father, mother, and young child—looking optimistically toward the future. Behind them, two powerful symbols rise: a flying peace dove (top left) and a tall residential building (left). This specific building is the famous Hochhaus an der Weberwiese, the very first "socialist palace" high-rise built in East Berlin. The standard "5" emblem appears in the bottom right, and the text "DEUTSCHE DEMOKRATISCHE REPUBLIK" anchors the bottom. Your copy is postmarked, with heavy black ink canceling the lower right corner.

Circa: 1953 - 1962

Condition: Used

Notes:

The building in the background is not just generic architecture; it is the Hochhaus an der Weberwiese. Completed in 1952, it was the prototype for the massive Stalinallee construction project. It was celebrated as the first "Palace for Workers," offering luxury amenities like central heating and elevators to regular citizens—if they were loyal party members.
