East Germany (DDR) The Nordhausen Nautical Surcharge

Under Review

Description: This is an authentic definitive postage stamp issued by the German Democratic Republic (DDR) as part of the 1954 "Surcharge" emergency series. The underlying base stamp is the 60 Pfennig steel-blue issue from the Five-Year Plan series, which captures the dramatic launch of a commercial cargo vessel from a Baltic slipway. To adjust for a realignment of postal tariffs, the state applied a heavy black overprint. A bold, stylized "X" completely voids the original "60" denomination in the upper-right corner, while a large numeral "50" is centered over the lower half of the vignette. The stamp features a remarkably bold, clean arc cancel spelling out "NORDHAUSEN".
