East Germany (DDR) Accordions of the Collective

Under Review

Description: This is the 30 Pfennig value from the German Democratic Republic's (DDR) Five-Year Plan definitive series. Printed in a vibrant orange-red, the design moves away from the heavy industrial imagery of the other values to celebrate cultural leisure. The vignette features a smiling folk dance couple in traditional costume performing a lively routine, accompanied by a musician playing an accordion on the left. The denomination "30" appears in the top-left corner. The bottom-right corner displays the ubiquitous "5" emblem (the symbol of the Five-Year Plan) surrounded by wheat ears and a compass. The designers' names, E. GRUNER and K. WOLF, are printed in tiny text along the bottom margin. Your copy features a heavy black circular cancellation, likely dated 1956.

Circa: 1950s-1960s

Condition: CTO

Notes:

While the rest of the series focused on miners, steelworkers, and farmers working hard, this stamp emphasized that "Socialist culture" was a pillar of the state. The government heavily subsidized folk dance groups (Volkstanzgruppen) and orchestras to promote a distinct national identity that was "socialist in content, but national in form."
