Description: This austere grey-black official service stamp (Dienstmarke) was issued by the German Democratic Republic (DDR / East Germany) exclusively for state use. The strictly functional design features a large, central numeric 5 (5 Pfennig) set against a fine guilloche security mesh background. The word "DIENSTMARKE" (Official Stamp) is framed at the top, while the full state title "DEUTSCHE DEMOKRATISCHE REPUBLIK" anchors the bottom. This example is heavily canceled with black quarter-circle postmarks, confirming it was used on actual government correspondence rather than being a mint collector copy.
Circa: 1954-1957
Condition: Used
Notes:
Unlike standard postage stamps, these Dienstmarken were never sold at post office counters to ordinary citizens. They were held in secure stock at government agencies, police stations, and state-run industrial offices to frank official bureaucratic mail.
