Fortress of Trencin Castle

Under Review

Description: This vintage 5 h (5 Czechoslovak haléřů) definitive postage stamp was issued by the Czechoslovak Republic as the base value of the highly popular "Castles" definitive series. The vertical monochrome illustration is rendered in a deep purple-brown ink against a soft cream backdrop. The vignette depicts a detailed perspective view of the historic Trenčín Castle (Trenčiansky hrad), emphasizing its multi-tiered fortifications and stone palisades resting on a steep, rocky hill. The country name "ČESKOSLOVENSKO" spans the upper border margin, while the numeric face value "5h" is cleanly centered in the upper right quadrant. Running vertically along the right border is the uppercase geographic identifier "TRENČÍN". Fine inscriptions along the absolute lower edge credit the original graphic layout design to painter Anton Hollý on the left, and the meticulous intaglio line engraving to master graphic artist Jiří Švengsbír on the right.

Circa: 1960

Condition: Used - Hinged

Notes:

Located in western Slovakia, Trenčín Castle is famous for a unique piece of ancient history carved into its foundation cliff. An authentic Roman inscription dating back to 179 AD commemorates a victory by the Roman Empire's Second Auxiliary Legion (Legio II Adiutrix), making it one of the northernmost documented traces of Roman military presence in Central Europe.
