Antonín Zápotocký Definitive Issue

Under Review

Description: This engraved postage definitive features a highly detailed, monochrome carmine-red portrait of Antonín Zápotocký, who served as the Prime Minister and subsequently the President of Czechoslovakia. The design showcases a fine line-engraved bust of the leader facing slightly left, set against a background of densely spaced horizontal shading lines. The top of the frame prominently displays the country name "ČESKOSLOVENSKO" in a simple serif typeface, while the lower left corner features a bold "60h" denomination designating a value of 60 haléřů. Micro-printed text along the bottom margin credits the prominent Czech security artists J. Poš and J. Jindra, who collaborated on the engraving and design. This particular specimen displays a heavy black bar postmark running horizontally across the leader's forehead and a second stylized marking near the top right corner.

Circa: 1950s

Condition: Used - Hinged

Notes:

Antonín Zápotocký assumed the presidency in March 1953 following the sudden death of Klement Gottwald, making this definitive series one of the earliest postal representations of his leadership. The production of this issue coincided with the highly controversial 1953 Czechoslovak monetary reform, a secretive economic maneuver that wiped out the savings of many ordinary citizens and sparked rare public protests.
