Treasure detail

Liberation of Nanjing and Shanghai

Under Review

Description: This is the 3 Yuan value from the "Liberation of Nanjing and Shanghai" commemorative set, issued by the East China People's Postal Service (華東人民郵政). It features the identical twin-map design as the brown 5 Yuan stamp you previously shared, celebrating the decisive Communist victories in Nanjing (left map) and Shanghai (right map). The stamp is printed in a distinct violet (purple) ink. The denomination is 3 Yuan, indicated by the Chinese characters "叁圓" in the bottom left and the Western numerals "300" in the bottom right. Note that the "00" is smaller and underlined, following the decimal convention of the time to represent "3.00", not 300 Yuan.

Circa: 1949

Condition: Unused - Hinged

Notes:

This highly historical issue was produced by the East China Liberated Area postal administration immediately following the capture of Nanjing and Shanghai by the People's Liberation Army in late May 1949. Because the regional authorities faced massive logistical constraints and hyperinflation during the final months of the Chinese Civil War, these stamps were printed via hasty offset lithography methods on exceptionally thin, low-grade paper. Due to these chaotic wartime conditions, the entire issue was released without gum as issued.
