Description: This notable issue belongs to the highly collectible "Flying Geese" series from China, featuring two geese mid-flight over a globe and swirling clouds. Originally engraved by the Dah Tung Book Company in Shanghai, this specific base stamp is an imperforate variety printed in dull green ink with an initial pre-printed face value of 50 Yuan. During the turbulent transitionary postal periods of the early 1950s, the postal administration applied a dark blue surcharge overprint to adjust the monetary value. This modification laid a prominent, dark blue box with the numeral "100" over the original bottom-right corner value space, while simultaneously overprinting the text "壹佰圓" (One Hundred Yuan) along the left margin to formally double the stamp's denomination for updated mail rates.
Circa: 1950 - 1951
Condition: MLH
Notes:
The unvalued Flying Geese design was initially ordered from the Shanghai Printing Press of the Dah Tung Book Company. The chaotic relocation of regional administrative centers left massive stocks of these base designs unissued, making them prime candidates for overprinting rather than executing completely new print runs.
