Bridging the Northumberland Strait

Under Review

Description: This high-denomination Canadian postage stamp features a beautiful, finely detailed monochrome engraving rendered in a rich red-violet hue. The central motif illustrates the massive steel hull of the legendary MV Abegweit train ferry pushing through open water, set against a vast, overcast sky. In the foreground, a traditional two-masted sailing boat provides a stark scale contrast to the sheer size of the modern motorized vessel. The stamp is bordered by an ornate, repeating geometric frame, with the bold bilingual text "POSTES" and "POSTAGE" flanking the arched country name "CANADA" along the upper curve. Large corner blocks proudly display the numeral "1" nestled inside octagonal frames, sandwiching the spelled-out face value "DOLLAR" across the lower baseline.

Circa: 1946

Condition: Unused - Aged - Hinged

Notes:

The ship captured by designers Herman Herbert Schwartz and Silas Robert Allen was a true engineering marvel of its time; when launched, the Abegweit was the heaviest icebreaking car and train ferry anywhere in the world, specifically built to handle the treacherous frozen winter crossings between Prince Edward Island and mainland New Brunswick.
