Treasure detail

Canada Supreme Court Centenary Block

Under Review

Description: Canadian 8-cent commemorative stamp issued in 1975 to mark the centenary of the Supreme Court of Canada. The design features Walter Seymour Allward’s sculpture Veritas before the Court building in Ottawa, using a striking magenta-and-blue division to suggest both bilingualism and the coexistence of Canada’s common law and civil law traditions. The result is a modern, symbolic judicial design rather than a literal architectural view.

Circa: 1975

Condition: Mint block of 4.

Notes:

Issued one hundred years after the founding of the Supreme Court of Canada in 1875, the stamp marks an institution central to the country’s legal development and national independence. By the mid-1970s the Court had long since become the final authority in Canadian law, and this centenary issue reflects that mature national role through a design rooted in justice, balance, and legal symbolism.
