Material: Gilt or brass
Size: 35 × 30 mm
Description: This 16th Battalion (Canadian Scottish) insignia features a prominent, textured numeral "16" layered over a stylized Saltire or St. Andrew's cross. A traditional Tudor crown rests symmetrically at the apex of the cross pattern, signifying allegiance to the reigning sovereign. The lower portion features a sweeping, upturned banner detailed with a finely pebbled texture. It is inscribed with the Scots Gaelic motto "DEAS GU CATH", which translates directly to "Ready for the fray". The entire piece is rendered in a polished golden brass finish, equipped with contemporary dual pin-back fasteners rather than historical wire loops or lugs on the reverse side.
Circa: Post-1953
Notes:
This commemorative collar badge reflects the heritage of the 16th Battalion (Canadian Scottish), a CEF unit raised in 1914 whose traditions continued through The Canadian Scottish Regiment (Princess Mary’s). The Queen’s Crown shows that this is a later regimental or commemorative piece rather than a First World War original.
The saltire-and-scroll design keeps the Scottish character of the regiment clearly in view, and the Gaelic motto gives the badge much of its identity. It is best understood as a post-war heritage badge linked to the battalion’s memory rather than wartime issue.
