Material: Gilt metal with sky-blue enamel field and silver figure
Dimensions: 40 mm W × 55 mm H
Description: This striking multi-piece insignia showcases a bright silver-plated figure of Mercury—traditionally nicknamed "Jimmy" by signallers—mid-stride while clutching a caduceus staff. The messenger god is mounted over a pair of large, golden-yellow enameled lightning bolts set within a smooth, circular sky-blue enamel center field. This central disc is enclosed by a stylized golden wreath of multi-pointed Canadian maple leaves, which is surmounted at the top by a prominent, red-enameled Queen Elizabeth II St. Edward's Crown. Stamped into the reverse vertical slider bar is the clear premium manufacturer hallmark text reading "WILLIAM SCULLY" around the central support bracket.
Circa: Post-1968 (unification period, Communications and Electronics Branch, successor to Royal Canadian Corps of Signals)
Notes:
Badge of the Communications and Electronics Branch, established in 1968 as part of the Canadian Forces unification, inheriting traditions of the Royal Canadian Corps of Signals. The figure of Mercury symbolizes swift communication, since Mercury was a messenger of the Roman gods. The lightning flashes allude to electronics. These symbols were used by the branch’s predecessor units: Mercury by the Royal Canadian Corps of Signals; and the flashes, or sparks, by the former Royal Canadian Air Force Telecommunications Branch and the Royal Canadian Navy Communicators.
