Canadian General Service Button

Under Review

Material: Gilt brass

Diameter: 25 mm

Description: The item is an authentic Canadian General Service military uniform tunic button, die-struck in un-blackened brass/gilding metal with a convex face. The face design is prominently dominated by a central circular garter belt inscribed with the traditional British chivalric Order of the Garter motto "HONI SOIT QUI MAL Y PENSE" (translating to "Shame on him who thinks evil of it"). Nestled directly within the inner field of the garter is a masterfully detailed, raised Canadian maple leaf showing sharp vein texturing. Surmounting the entire garter motif is a beautifully detailed King's Crown (Tudor style), representing the reigning British monarch of the period. Sweeping across the upper rim of the button is the capitalized country title "CANADA" in an elegant, wide-spaced serif font. The reverse of this specific specimen features a completely smooth, unmarked back surface fitted with a fixed copper wire attachment eyelet meant for securing the piece to a heavy wool service dress tunic.

Circa: 1902–1952
