Royal Canadian Navy Shipwright Qualification Insignia

Under Review

Material: Machine-embroidered gold thread on dark navy wool backing
Size: 77mm w x 80mm h
Description: This arched fabric sleeve patch was created for the Royal Canadian Navy (RCN) to identify a sailor's specific trade qualification level. It showcases a beautifully detailed, embroidered yellow-gold wood axe crossed with a heavy felling hammer against a solid dark navy blue wool canvas backing. Floating directly above the intersection of the tools is an intricate, six-pointed star stitched in matching vibrant thread. The clean, un-bordered raw edge is designed to be folded under and cleanly whip-stitched directly onto the upper arm of a service dress uniform jacket.
Circa: Mid 20th Century
Notes:

The combination of the crossed axe and hammer denotes the vital trade of a Shipwright, the naval artisan responsible for structural maintenance, damage control, and woodwork aboard seafaring vessels. The addition of the six-pointed star positioned directly over the tools denotes a high proficiency level, specifically identifying a Rating 2nd Class within that trade branch. Pieces like this were heavily subjected to sea spray, salt air, and regular uniform laundering, making unissued or well-preserved specimens highly prized by military historians tracking Commonwealth naval history.
