Material: Gilt brass (gilding metal)
Size: 30 mm w × 35 mm h
Description: The artifact is a beautifully struck brass cap insignia designed for the non-commissioned officers and enlisted soldiers of Lord Strathcona’s Horse (Royal Canadians). The intricate design centers on the personal coat of arms and family crest of the regiment's founder, Sir Donald Alexander Smith, the 1st Baron Strathcona and Mount Royal. It prominently features a central heraldic shield loaded with fur-trading iconography inherited from the North West Company, including a striking upper demi-lion rampant, a center hammer and nail crossed in saltire, and a lower canoe propelled by four paddlers. The shield is draped with a banner boldly displaying the unit's historic motto "PERSEVERANCE" and is entirely encircled by a dense wreath containing roses, thistles, shamrocks, and maple leaves to symbolize Canada's constitutional ties to Great Britain. A large, classic Tudor Crown (often called the King's Crown) surmounts the top of the design, while the lower ring banner proudly bears the full designation "LORD STRATHCONA'S HORSE ROYAL CANADIANS".
Reverse: Unmarked with dual lugs.
Circa: 1920-1952
