RCAF No. 4 SFTS "Course 92" Pilot Jacket Patch

Under Review

Material: Cloth Felt

Size: 191mm wingspan x 122mm h

Description: This substantial jacket patch is constructed from multiple layers of felt with chain-stitched embroidery. The design features a navy blue felt background cut in the shape of the RCAF eagle, surmounted by a King's Crown (Tudor Crown) detailed in red and gold thread. The central focal point is a white felt roundel containing a red maple leaf and the text "RCAF," surrounded by a blue ring inscribed with "AIR CREW," "PILOT," and the specific class identifier "COURSE 92." Below the main roundel, a scroll bears the unit designation "#4 SFTS." With a wingspan of 191mm (approx. 7.5 inches), this large crest was intended to be sewn onto the back or chest of a flight jacket or athletic sweater rather than a dress uniform.

Circa: 1943-1944

Notes:

No. 4 Service Flying Training School (SFTS) was located in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. It was a major hub under the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan (BCATP). The "Plan" was one of Canada's greatest contributions to WWII, training over 130,000 aircrew. Saskatoon's No. 4 SFTS was one of the earliest schools established, opening in September 1940.

While course dates could vary slightly between schools, "Course 92" across the BCATP generally ran during the winter of 1943–1944 (graduating around March 1944).
