Material: Gilt metal
Size: 50 mm × 50 mm
Description: This vintage metal artifact is an official campus security badge from the University of British Columbia (UBC). Crafted with a brilliant polished gold finish, the central feature displays the UBC Coat of Arms shield, showcasing an open book at the chief inscribed with the university's famous Latin motto "TUUM EST" (It is yours). Below the book, stylized undulating wavy lines depict the Pacific Ocean, rising directly above a radiant setting sun at the base. The shield is flanked by laurel leaves and cradled by a sweeping lower scroll that proudly spells out "THE UNIVERSITY OF BRITISH COLUMBIA," while a bold, integrated top banner cleanly displays the word "PATROL." The reverse side is entirely unmarked and features dual screw posts designed to anchor the heavy metal badge tightly to a uniform jacket or peaked cap.
Circa: 20th Century
Notes:
The "Tuum Est" Meaning: The school's famous motto, "Tuum Est," translates directly from Latin to "It is yours" or "It is up to you," a phrase chosen in 1915 to emphasize personal responsibility, ambition, and community ownership.
The Evolution of UBC Security: Before transitioning to the modern, soft-uniformed "UBC Campus Security" infrastructure seen today, the university utilized a formal, paramilitary styled "Patrol" division that wore traditional police-style metal badges, peaked caps, and structured duty tunics.
Previous COTC related ID remains unconfirmed. Possibly mid century officer training corps cadet patrol.
