Liverpool’s familiar Liver Bird takes on a military role in this cloth formation sign of the 23rd Armoured Brigade. Printed in black against a pale circular background, the distinctive bird identified a formation whose wartime service extended far beyond the city associated with its emblem.

A familiar crown, but whose rank did it signify? This brass King’s Crown could have formed part of several rank arrangements, its meaning shaped by where it was worn and the stars or chevrons beside it. Separated from its uniform, it leaves those details open. Its steep arches and beaded detail also make it a useful companion to our Crown Types guide, showing how the design appeared on an actual piece of insignia.

“Win the War.” Three words turn this small violet stamp into a striking piece of wartime messaging. Issued on American Independence Day in 1942, it shows an eagle with wings raised in a “V” for victory. Its three-cent denomination put that message on everyday letters, carrying a public call for resolve alongside the private words inside. The cancellation marks on this example are a reminder that it served that ordinary postal purpose.

A king, his crown, a lion, and a unicorn share this small piece of wartime Britain. George VI’s portrait sits above the Royal Arms, surrounded by fine detail that rewards a closer look. The “2/6” in its upper corners means two shillings and sixpence, or half a crown.

Among the badges and symbols of wartime service, this everyday object tells a quieter story. Made by Dixon and dated 1942, the fork bears the British government’s broad arrow and a number that may once have identified its owner. Who carried it, and where they sat down to eat, remain open questions. It is a small reminder that military life included ordinary meals, familiar routines, and keeping track of your belongings.
